State Legislative Priorities

Show your support for Creative Sector Jobs and Small Nonprofit Performing Arts Groups!

We’re excited to share that Senate Bill 628 (Allen) the CA Creative Workforce Act of 2021 is headed to the Governor’s desk after passing an Assembly floor vote before the end of the legislative session on Friday. SJAA was proud to support this bill, which was co-sponsored by our partner organization, California Arts Advocates (CAA) and Arts for LA.

In other news, SB 805 (Rubio) also made it through the Assembly and is ready for the Governor’s signature. SJAA joined a statewide coalition in support of this bill that would provide vital relief to small nonprofit performing arts groups that have been severely impacted by COVID closures and recent changes to state labor laws.

Governor Newsom has 30 days to sign or veto these bills. With your help, we can prove to the Governor that the arts, culture and creative industry are a vital part of not only our recovery from the ongoing impacts of the pandemic, but building back better.

How you can support SB 628:

CAA has created a letter and a simple form to add your organization’s logo and name here. They are looking for arts organizations, independent venues, cultural institutions, creative businesses, unions, service organizations, trade associations, and local governments to sign the letter.

Please share with your networks and any interested groups. You can also send in a personal letter to the Governor here. Learn more about the bill here.

How you can support SB 805:

Artists, arts advocates, and particularly performing arts groups in the Bay Area are encouraged to submit a letter to Governor Newsom. His staff has hinted that he is still on the fence about signing SB 805, and we need to turn up the pressure to make it happen. Download a template letter here, add your name, organization, and personal message, and email it to leg.unit@gov.ca.gov. Learn more about the bill here.
