Final City Budget Hearing Monday, June 12, 2023, 6:00pm
The Mayor has released his June Budget Message, and the time has come for final City Council deliberations on how the City will spend its money in the year ahead. But first, they want to hear from you. So we’re asking you to READ UP, SPEAK UP, and SHOW UP for the creative industry.
There’s good news for arts and culture in the Mayor’s budget, including one-time funding to supplement the City’s Cultural Grants programs. But this only underscores the need for more sustainable funding sources.
That’s why we support a recommendation from five councilmembers including District 3’s Omar Torres to dedicate future Transient Occupancy Tax revenue to arts, culture, and tourism programs. We’re also calling on the Council to direct Administration to pursue a Percent for Art from private development. Both of these are SJAA policy priorities.
